JUNE 2009 Update While media attention is focussed on the tragedy of Darfur, another story of suffering in South Sudan remains untold. In recent months, more people have been killed in Southern Sudan than in Darfur (the number is in the 1000's according to the UN). One area alone has more than 18 000 people displaced, fleeing their villages during attacks, homes are being burnt, children abducted, men, women and children being killed. These internally displaced people (IDP's) have lost their possessions, many are sick and the children mostly malnourished, most are sleeping out under trees. Recently we managed to reach one of the affected areas and provide some aid and relief. Please join us in prayer for these folk and for the country of Sudan.
ABOUT SUDAN CRISIS For many years, the goal of our work in southern Sudan was to encourage the people displaced from their homes and villages by more than 25 years of warfare. However, since open warfare in the south is less frequent following the “peace agreement”, we have been able, through our partnerships, to establish the Western Upper Nile Bible School and several orphanages. The delivery of construction materials has enabled the people to erect more permanent buildings for the school and orphanages. We are amazed at the incredible faith of the Christians in southern Sudan, in spite of the persecution, and we continue to tell their stories. For the past few years, reports of unbelievable violence and atrocities have come out of the Darfur region of western Sudan. While thousands of innocent people have been killed, it is believed that more than two million people have been displaced from their homes - some facing confinement in refugee camps within Darfur, many others fleeing to neighboring countries to face confinement there. We have begun working inside Darfur with the distribution of critical relief aid to the displaced people who are struggling for survival. These people live in constant fear of being attacked, tortured, or killed. |
